The Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest university art museum in the western hemisphere. Located in New Haven, Connecticut, it is home to a significant and encyclopedic collection of art in several buildings on the Yale University campus. The gallery features all cultures and periods, however, it possesses especially famous collections of early Italian paintings, African sculpture, and modern art. Yale’s collections of American decorative and fine arts are also very notable.
The gallery was founded in 1832 when John Trumbull, a patriot/artist donated over 100 paintings of the American Revolution to the university. A ten-year renovation project is set to be completed this year. The museum is a member of the North American Reciprocal Museums program, which is an association of arts and cultural institutions in Bermuda, Canada, El Salvador, Mexico and the United States.
Yale works to stimulate active learning about the artistic and creative processes through teaching, research, and an active dialogue between students, faculty, artists, scholars, alumni, and the public as well. “The mission of the Yale University Art Gallery is to encourage appreciation and understanding of art and its role in society through direct engagement with original works of art. The Gallery organizes exhibitions and educational programs to offer enjoyment and encourage inquiry, while building and maintaining its collections in trust for future generations.”
