One of the most important things to guarantee the safety of your delicate items during shipment is using the right kind of packing materials. At Navis Pack & Ship, we have conveniently provided a glossary of terms on our website that includes everything you need to know about a packing and shipping company. We determine the best packing materials for specific items, since not all items require the same packing materials. To make sure you know exactly what is going to protect your shipment, here are a few key shipping and packing materials defined for you:
- Art crate: a specialized crate designed for artwork that may be expensive or extremely valuable. These art crates are custom made by Navis. Art crates are typically made of wood.
- Block and Brace: pieces of lumber used to keep cargo in place within a crate. These pieces of lumber include polyethylene foam, bubble packaging or paper pads.
- Container: a standard sized box, designed for shipment of freight by air, truck or rail; dimension vary. The dimensions of these containers conform to International Standards Organization standards.
- Cradle: a “U” shaped cradle designed to hold cylindrical objects.
- Cushioning systems: are polyethylene polyurethane pieces of foam that protect the valued goods; they range in different densities, depending on the items that will be shipped. These foam pieces protect the items from vibration and motion in the crate.
- Custom crates: Navis Pack & Ship creates custom made crates for unusually large, awkward, fragile and extremely valuable items. We measure and determine the most suitable options and dimension for the crate, depending the items that will be shipped.
- Foam-in-place packaging: a liquid form of polyethylene material that expands into a dense and solid form around the object in a crate. It creates a customized mold shape around the object. Foam-in-place packing is very dense and strong. It is used for very fragile items, including computers and metal sculptures.
- Wood crates: structural framework pieces of wood fastened together to form a rigid enclosure, which protects the items within it during handling, shipping and storage. Wood crates are typically square or rectangular shaped.
