When you build a business on shipping FLAV, you really can't be too surprised when something comes in that fits in all categories! This taxedermied trophy marlin is fragile, large, awkward and valuable, so who better to pack and ship it than Navis Pack & Ship?
This photo comes from Peter of Navis Pack & Ship Philadelphia. The customer purchased this beautifully preserved fish from a nearby auction company called Uniques & Antiques, which deals in estate auctions, liquidations, and consignments. The customer needed the marlin to be shipped to St. Catherines in Ontatio, Canada. As you can see from the photo, marlins have a long, delicate, spear-like snout and thin fins which can easily be broken in transit. This marlin is only partially packed in the photo above, but it's easy to see how he is carefully wedged so no amount of movement in the crate will harm any part of the body.
Atlantic marlins, which this specimin most likely is, can reach up to 5 meters (that's 16 feet!) and 1,500 pounds. While this particular marlin doesn't seem to be a record holder, it's still an incredibly impressive animal and was probably taken as a trophy because of his flawless, beautiful body. Marlins are very fast swimmers, using all that body mass and muscle for torpedoing through the oceans at almost 70 miles per hour - it's no wonder why marlin sport fishing is so competitive! In fact, most modern marlin fishers release their catch - only the very large are taken ashore to be weighed to see if there is a record set.
