In August of 2013, a rare 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S N.A.R.T. Spider was put on the auction block at RM Auctions in Monterey, CA. When the bidding for the rare luxurious sports car ended, it reached a number that is more than the total income of most towns. The winning bid for the Ferrari was a record $27.5 million and, for those of you keeping score, that’s 27,500,000 McChicken sandwiches from McDonalds. Wow.

The historic RM Auctions is already gearing up for their high-end car auction in Monterey this year. The prestigious auction house stages events throughout the world selling exotic cars in tropical, lavish cities like Monaco, St John’s and Amelia Island. The Monterey show will last from August 15-16 and, if last year’s show is any indication, the 2014 auction will be packed with ceremonious rare and exotic sports cars for the bidding.
One auction company that competes with RM is another high-end car dealer, Gooding & Company. The auction house’s 2013 Pebble Beach event was their 10th Anniversary of selling immaculate cars in California. Gooding & Company also offers a private car buying option on their website (goodingco.com). They currently have an inventory of over 1,900 cars on their website and some of the rare magnificent cars that were available at their 2014 Amelia Island auction were a 1974 purple Ferrari Dino 246 GTS, a 1964 Mini cherry red Cooper S, a 1966 Aston Martin priced between $550,000 and $650,000.
Rounding out the list of excellent auto auction houses in California is McCormick’s Palm Springs Car Auctions. McCormick’s is a family owned exotic car auction and they host two expansive and prestigious car auctions every year in Palm Springs. The company also has a year-round shop and showroom that is open to the public where they can purchase rare and classic cars.
