Some people aren't looking for the white picket fence, the stable 9-5, the reliable chain restaurant around the corner. Some people seek adventure, and when the opportunity to move abroad knocks on their door, they're ready with passport in hand. Whether you're looking to join an ex-pat colony on a Thai island, relocating to Hong Kong to advance your career, or moving to Paris to study art for a few years, before beginning the next exciting chapter of your life living overseas, make sure you stop and take inventory of all your personal belongings. Deciding what you want to ship internationally can be an arduous process but is an essential step in furthering your move. There are several key things you need to keep in mind when moving and shipping items abroad, and remember that you have to take extra precaution when sending delicate items like antiques and fine arts abroad.
Always take into account the international fees you will be charged, such as shipping tariffs and custom fees. Each country’s fees and tariffs vary but make sure you consult the country’s website to find out any taxes you might incur. Every country will also require that you fill out custom forms explaining the items that you are shipping and your valuables will have to be within that country’s regulations.
It’s always good to consider backing your valuable items with insurance, especially if you're transporting fine art. And also remember that shipping anything internationally will definitely take more time. If you need your shipped items as soon as you land in that country, make sure you give yourself at least three to four weeks to get there.
There’s no such thing as too much precaution when sending fragile and delicate items, such as artwork and antiques, overseas. First, wrap your artwork in copious amounts of bubble and palette packaging, and make sure to secure the packaging with clear packing tape. The proper amount of cardboard can also always provide a key layer of padding. It’s also equally important to paper the item with stickers that say “Fragile.” If your item is glass, invest in masking tape that’s specifically designed to protect the glass. If you have any doubts, it's best to consult a professional. Shipping belongings overseas is the longest and roughest journey your belongings will take, so every extra bit counts.
But the single most important element in sending anything internationally is choosing the proper shipping company. Make sure to visit Navis Pack and Ship, a company that specializes in international shipping and will undoubtedly make sure your items arrive safe and secure.
