Located in Kleinberg, Ontario just six miles from Navis Pack & Ship Toronto and a few minutes away from the heart of Toronto, the gallery is more of a rustic pilgrimage than a traditional art house. The building was built with hand-hewn logs and is a woodsy triangle-shaped cabin like structure, making it a perfect vessel for the almost 6,000 artworks that currently adorn the walls. The massive amount of art is featured in the 13 galleries in-house galleries from painters Tom Thomson, First Nation and Inuit artists as well as the Group of Seven, all honoring Canada’s rich artistic heritage.
The themes of the time-honored artwork range from lavish recreations of Canadian landscape, with an acute emphasis on color, shape and details, more thematic and abstract religious from the First Nations Art, and heavily diversified pieces by Inuit painters including sculptures and prints.
Outside of the gallery is 100 acres of peaceful wooded area nestled alongside the Humber River Valley. At the end of the panoramically pristine trails is the newly constructed Sculpture Garden and McMichael Cemetery. The powerful combination of perfect natural scenery mixed with unforgettable historic artwork makes it entirely easy to understand why over 100,000 visitors flock to McMichael every year with 30,000 students and teachers also make the journey.
McMichael also offers a wide array of classes and public programs that allow the surrounding community members to become fluent in all things artistic. The events offered include everything from guided tours, workshops, and activities for both families and kids.
