Downtown Tyler, Texas is undergoing a revitalization campaign. And the artists want in on it.
Heart of Tyler, Inc. and the City of Tyler's Main Street Department have organized a group of dedicated volunteers (mostly artists and art supporters) to promote the arts in their city. The Downtown Tyler Arts Coalition has the loftier goal of not just pumping fresh spirit and energy into their downtown neighborhood, but managing Gallery Main Street, encourage art activities Downtown, and attracting art businesses into Downtown.
All mediums of art are included and welcomed by the Coalition. Paint, sculptures, dance, photography, graphic art, abstracts, music and more are frequently on display. There was even a cell phone photography section of a previous art walk! That's something everyone can relate to, and there usually is at least a little something for everyone.
Gallery Main Street is also hosting a variety of brand new exhibitions in 2013. A new exhibition started Saturday, and goes until February 19th, called Introductions: An Exhibition of Fiber Arts. Another exhibition, set to open at the end of February, is accepting artist submissions until 5pm Monday January 21st. Check their list of upcoming exhibitions and participation requirements here. Artists participate in juried competitions and opening nights often treat patrons to apetizers and live music (and it's free!).
Don't forget to check out the Downtown Tyler Art Walk, held Saturday April 6th 2013 from 4-9pm. Downtown businesses get in on the fun by hosting an individual artist in their venues and allowing Tyler residents to mill about listening to and looking at different types of art. This yearly event draws plenty of visitors who all gather to share in the art on display, and helps fund future Downtown revitalization efforts.
