On Saturday, November 5th, take the opportunity to learn more about the Hayward Fault Line in your backyard in Hayward, CA. This major earthquake fault runs almost 55 miles through the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay area, including the cities of Richmond, El Cerrito, Berkeley, Oakland, San Leandro, Hayward, Fremont, and San Jose.
Join United States Geological Survey (USGS) scientist Jim Lienkaemper on this walking tour of the fault from 10 - 11:30 am. The free hike will begin at City Hall and show participants the active traces of the fault, which is slipping approximately 0.2 inch per year. Lienkaemper will also explain the potential future hazards if a major earthquake were to occur on the fault.
The Hayward Fault is parallel to its more famous and much longer westerly neighbor, the San Andreas Fault, which unlike the creeping Hayward Fault, is “locked” in place between major earthquakes.
Will you be brave enough to “Walk the Line”?
Please note that heavy rains will cancel the hike.
