Sixth Street in Austin, Texas was originally named Pecan Street. Over the years, the area of Pecan Street became run down and considered a dodgy part of town. In the 1970s, locals began reconstructing the run-down district and Pecan Street was renamed Sixth Street. In an effort to draw people back to the area, The Pecan Street Festival was organized for the community.
Every Spring and Fall, the festival takes place on Sixth Street, also known as the center of Austin’s live entertainment scene. Since then, it has become one of the largest free art festivals in central Texas.
Those who attend can find items such as sculptures, paintings, jewelry, games, woodwork, and décor for the household. In addition to arts and crafts, there are local musicians performing on three stages around the festival. Exhibits on display this year include the Doc Seaton’s Magic Side Show, Wahls Face the Day Tour, and The Lego Experience.
Not only can you find items to take home, but also the proceeds benefit the community. Local non-profit organizations are chosen by the Pecan Street Merchants Association to receive these proceeds.
This year, the festival takes place on the first weekend of May. The hours are on Saturday from 11am-10pm and on Sunday from 11am-8pm. Go have fun at the Pecan Street Festival and call Navis to pack and ship your arts and crafts!
