Detroit Symphony Orchestra

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) has an extensive history that dates all the way back to 1887, when they performed their first concert at the Detroit Opera House. Since then, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra has blossomed into a mainstay of the city's rich, and storied music scene. The symphony's main performance space is located at Orchestra Hall at the Max M. Fisher Music Center where patrons can see "Beethoven's Seventh," "Cirque de la Symphonie," "Firebird," and "Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet" in January and February.

The community outreach of the DSO is also particularly noteworthy as many of their performances are available online at dso.org/live. And unlike some other symphonies, the DSO brings their immense talent to the people, as they often perform free community concerts for the surrounding Detroit neighborhoods. The actual orchestra is comprised of first violins, second violins, violas, violoncellos, basses and a single, majestic harp player.

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra's "Educational Concert Series" is renowned for bringing children into the world of classical music. The concert series includes several upcoming performances such as "Project Trio," a joint venture between the Brooklyn-based group and the DSO Orchestra and "Beethoven Lives Upstairs," where 30 of Beethoven's works are the soundtrack of a two-actor play.

An equally worthwhile concert series coming up is the "Paradise Jazz Series," featuring celebrated musicians Kenny Garrett, John and Gerald Clayton Duo, and the Terence Blanchard Quintet. Subscriptions to the jazz concerts are available for as low as $90 and DSO patrons can also receive a classical and pops subscription totaling seven concerts, for the exact same price.

In accordance with the WU Family Academy, the orchestra is now offering a Neighborhood Residency Training Program where private and group tutoring are available. Years of giving back to the community seem to be paying off for DSO. After briefly striking in 2010, the orchestra has seen an almost 25 percent increase in subscription growth in the last four years.
