Artists have a paradoxical dilemma; their art doesn’t make them a lot of money, but they have to spend money to make their art. Everyone knows that paints, clays, canvases, spaces, brushes, or what have you, are costly. This is the very reason that art patrons were a rather big deal throughout history, but it’s time we take our artistic independence back. There are ways you can be financially smart about creating your art - especially today when upcycled art and unusual materials are becoming so popular. Here are a few tips on how to do exactly that!
1- Be smart about your art and plan ahead. Figure out exactly what you will need for your next artistic endeavor. Make a list of all of your supplies and shop around online for the best possible prices. Don’t be lazy. Consider checking out Craigslist or EBay as well, you can find almost anything on there.
2- Invest in information. Speak to other artists to find out how they make their art and see what you can adapt into your own project. The more you know the easier it will be to invest in proper gallery spaces, agents, and of course, supplies. It doesn't hurt to make friends along the way, either!
3- See what you can make on your own.
a) If you’re thinking about trying your hand at sculpture, instead of investing in clay or something a bit more expensive, try making papier-mache. It’s one of the best and cheapest ways to practice sculpture or, at the very least, plan out your idea. All you need is a bit of water and some flour. Mix in a bit of Elmer’s glue and proceed as usual for a more solid finish.
b) There are many different types of ways to make paint. Chances are, you already have everything you need. Take a bit of liquid starch, soap powder, food coloring and water. Look up some DIY tips for specific instruction if you have a certain type of paint you want to make and plan accordingly. Not only will this help you save money, it will make you feel amazing knowing that you did it all on your own.
c) Did you know that you can make chalk? Yes, indeed you can. You’ll need some tempra paint, a bit of water, and a tad of plaster of paris and proceed. Here is a great site for more tips on DIY supplies.
