There is something really great about being around creative people. Maybe it’s their energy, or maybe it has something to do with their expressive natures, regardless of what it is, being in their company sparks our own artistic inspiration. Alicia Marion, Charles (Chazz) Miller, and John George made a similar observation when they opened up Artists Village Detroit in 2003. It’s a beautiful thing, when art and art enthusiasts can come together.

The three remarkable individuals established Artists Village (AV) to revitalize their community through artistic projects and workshops, so that they can teach creative expression and break the “starving artist mentality” by those interested in developing their skills. The non-profit organization gives all donations back to the community. Featuring everything from the Longest Open Mic Poetry series, to Motor City Blight Busters and Public Art Workz, it offers everything necessary for nurturing artistic ability in others.
The Detroit AV supports a number of social programs for young people such as music and art classes, dance, chess and gardening skills, as well as helping them develop their entrepreneurial natures via mentoring. As the Village continues, more and more other courses are being offered, just check out their calendar for 2014.
The Artists Village is located on Lahser Rd, Detroit, MI 48219, and because so many of their endeavors are art based, it’s good to know that Navis Pack and Ship is only 13 miles away in Motor City, 22870 Venture Dr. #A. So if you ever find yourselves in Artists Village presenting an artistic installation or your latest written word, all of your props can be easily transported to you.
