Bathsheba isn't your ordinary sculpture artist
Founded in 1996, Bathsheba Sculpture in Somerville, Mass melds the ever-evolving connection between mathematics and art like few have ever done before. Bathsheba Grossman, a former web designer, teacher, and tech artist started the sculpture house in hopes of extending the field of sculpture into the realm of mathematics. Many of the pieces on the Bathsheba Sculpture website are meticulously made using 3D printed metal and are sold at reasonable prices.
The site is divided into several categories: the gallery, crystal shop, jewelry, sculptures, and mini sculptures. Many of the larger format sculptures are constructed using 3D printed metal and the design of the pieces are mostly math-themed. The pieces such as the “Double-Zarf,” are usually shaped in a curious way, and feature everything from disjointed symmetry, pointy edges, and interwoven cubes, to complete interlaced structures. Grossman uses the same techniques to create the mini sculptures on the site, just in a pared-down size. The deeply intricate ornaments are particularly fascinating, specifically the Mini Quin, which also serves as lamp.
The math-themed sculptures are also available as jewelry, again just in a smaller form. Some of the standout pieces include the Ora Pendant, the Flame Alpha Pendant, and the Borromean Rings Pendant. Grossman also incorporates highly refined technology to create crystal key chains and paperweights. The technique is called laser etching and it uses software to perfect exact recreations of galaxies, biological elements like caffeine, and even a DNA-patterned keychain.
The gallery at Bathsheba Sculpture is an incredibly interesting mix of commissioned pieces, Ikea-ish lamps, and interpretations of others' past works. If you’re browsing the site, chances are your eyes will also be drawn to the Colorplanes Steel section as the artful pieces pop with vibrant splashes of color. If you do decide to purchase any of these wonderful and creative pieces, make sure to properly handle the shipping and packaging of the works.
