There are several towering monuments dedicated to our most famous political figures, such as Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, but less well known are statues of the less famous political figures of our country. In fact, one of the most interesting statues in America is actually a series of monuments honoring the pioneering women of the United States called “Madonna of the Trail.” There are 12 Madonna of the Trail monuments in 12 different states that stretch from Upland, California to Cumberland, Maryland. Originally commissioned by the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, each statue features a pioneering mother holding a child and are truly massive in size and scale. We tend to forget that women were just as integral to the foundation of America and these statues are a wonderful reminder. Another statue that honors a group of individuals is The Lone Sailor, also located in 12 states. The monument honors all of these who have served a tour of duty on the sea.
It's no surprise that most consider Abraham Lincoln and George Washington the two most important U.S. presidents of all time. Besides our nation’s capital, we honor these men with artwork or statues in a number of other states. Unsurprisingly, a statue called Abraham Lincoln: The Man is located in his home state of Illinois. The original statue was constructed in Lincoln Park, Chicago, but since that time there have been many iterations of the monument spread throughout the entire world. A little bit more surprising is that a substantial George Washington statue, called George Washington as Master Mason, is located in Indianapolis, Indiana. American sculptor Donald De Lue constructed the piece that depicts Washington in a slew of Masonic symbols.
For the best sources of artwork on notable political figures, always begin your search at major art museums like the National Gallery of Art, and Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. Another trustworthy and extensive source for political artwork are the presidential libraries that honor the individual legacy of each U.S. president. There are endless artistic pieces that exhibit our storied leaders and are absolutely worth exploring throughout the country.
